Training update August 28th, 2009

Dear  All,

Despite the high temperatures we still had a good turnout again last Sunday and it was nice to welcome more new players to our group.  It looks as though this Sunday will be a little cooler.

Registration
If you have not already done so, please register on-line at the club web site http://www.deatigersrfc.com/, print-out the registration form then bring it along with your membership fee to Kings Park this Sunday between 08:30am through 10:30am to pay and collect your kit.   The fee of HK$600 for the first child and HK$400 for other children in the same family includes your child's shirt, shorts, socks, mouth guard, size 3 rugby ball and a season of training and festivals lasting until April 2010.

More players needed
We would still like to attract more children to join us in the U6's and other age groups, so please invite school friends and relatives to come along and join us.  I have once again attached a copy of our poster to help you promote our club.  Alternatively please contact the kit distribution staff at the club house this Sunday if you need more small posters or a large poster to display at school or similar locations.

Hong Kong Rugby 7's
Membership also entitles you to book your Hong Kong Rugby 7's tickets in advance and collect them from the club without the need to queue up on the ticket public sales day.  This event will be held at the Hong Kong Stadium on Friday 26 March 2010, Saturday 27 March 2010 and Sunday 28 March 2010.  Note that you and your child will need tickets if you would like to take them to play in the Mini Rugby Showcase, which for the U6's is normally held on the Friday afternoon before the main event starts.  We will announce more about the Hong Kong Rugby 7's ticket application around the end of September, in the meantime, if you are not already familiar with this event you can find out more at http://www.hksevens.com/index.html

Previous two weeks U6 news emails
For those of you who have just joined or who missed my past two weeks emails, I have copied them again at the end of this email.  I have also repeated the welcome letter and players check list, attached.

New kit
I noticed many of you have already collected your Little Tigers new kit last Sunday and hopefully you should be able to collect your size 3 rugby ball this Sunday.  Remember you will need to show your membership payment receipt in order to collect your ball at the club house.  Please do write you child's name in the panel on the back of their shirt.  This can be done with a permanent marking pen and is a great help for the Coaches to quickly identify players and get know their names.  Please also write their names on the new ball as soon as you collect it this Sunday.  This saves a lot of tears due to missing balls.  Do remember that it is essential to bring your ball along to each training session in future.  Please come and see me this Sunday if any of you need assistance in fitting your Little Tigers mouth guard as they are often too large for the smaller players and will need to be trimmed a little, but not too much.

Another U6 Assistant Coach
I am pleased to advise that another U6 parent, James Byatt, has volunteered to join us as an Assistant Coach this season.  His son Tomas is in the U6's.  We still welcome any other parents who would like to assist with coaching.

Coaching Guidelines
For parents and Coaches alike I have attached a copy of our U6's Coaching Guidelines.  This will give you an idea of our coaching targets for this age group.  Do not hesitate to ask me if you have any questions or suggestions about this.

Pitch Marshals for the DeAT Festival
Our DeA Tigers rugby festival will take place at King's Park on Sunday 01 November 2009 and we will have four U6 age group pitches.  I am looking for eight parents to volunteer as Pitch Marshals, two per pitch.  I trust that the following six parents who took up the task of Pitch Marshal at last season's festival will kindly take up the task again this time and try to attract two more parents to make up the required total of eight.   I have attached a copy of the guidelines for U6 Pitch Marshals for your reference.   Thank you.

First Aiders
If you are a medical Doctor, Nurse or have been trained and qualified in First Aid, with or without CPR and AED, and would be prepared to assist in the event of an accident during club activities, please kindly contact me.

U6's Parents & Coaches Touch Rugby Team
Each season we enter an U6 Coaches and Parents team in the DeAT Touch Rugby Fun Day, normally held at King's Park in April.   I am looking for U6 parents, Mums & Dads, to join the U6 Assistant Coaches to make up a team of 14 players.  Some of the U6 and U7 Coaches had a short 5 minute each way game after training last Sunday.  It would be great to have other parents joining in this Sunday.  It's great fun and good exercise.  Why not stay and watch us play after training this Sunday.   A copy of the Touch Rugby Rules is attached for your reference.  As you can see, it is very similar to the rugby your Little Tigers will be playing this season.

Training Attendance Record.
I am looking for a parent to help ensure the attendance record is updated each Sunday morning.  Please let me know this Sunday if you are able to help me with this task.  Thank you.

DeAT web site
As always please be reminded to check out the club web site regularly at http://www.deatigersrfc.com/
for more information and pictures of our Little Tigers.

HKRFU web site
For information about the Hong Kong rugby scene in general please check-out the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union web site at http://www.hkrugby.com/

Promote your business or other activities
If you would like other DeAT U6 members to know about your business or other activities that might be of interest to them, please send me details and I will place this information on a private page in my company web site at http://www.laudenhk.com/deat_friends.htm for interested members to access.

Well, that's a lot of information to absorb this week.  I look forward to see you all again at King's Park this Sunday morning, starting at 08:30am and don't forget to bring plenty of water, hats and sun block please!

Cheers,
Colin.

Welcome letter
Please find attached my U6's parents welcome letter.  At the end of this letter you will find a useful check-list.  Please involve your child in using this check list when preparing for training each Sunday morning.

Now for a little mini rugby terminolgy:
1.    Our age group is known as the U6's, that's short for the Under 6's.  (In the past this age group was also known as the U7J's, that was short for the Under 7 Junior's.)  This group also includes the U5's.  Whilst the U5's and U6's will do much of their training together, we will separate these two age groups for some activities.
2.    This seasons U6's covers players born in 2004.  The U5's covers players born in 2005 and 2006.
3.    "Little Tigers", that's what we call all the players in the U5's/U6's group.  This is taken from our club name "DeA Tigers Rugby Football Club".
4.    DeA stands for "Duke of Edinburgh Award" which was the name of the original Senior rugby club before combining with Kai Tak Tigers to become DeA Tigers.
5.    A Mouth Guard, also known as a Gum Shield, is a soft plastic cover worn over the upper teeth to provide not only protection to the players teeth but also protection to other players in the event of a collision.  Mouth Guards must be worn at all times during training and rugby games.
6.    "Player of the Month" badges.  These are presented to selected players at the end of each month based on attendance, effort and performance.  So do remember to tick the attendance record each Sunday morning as this has a major influence on the selection of players to receive "Player of the Month" badges.  Please also make sure I have your details correct on the attendance record.

Mini Rugby Festivals
DeA Tigers will host the first of this seasons inter-club rugby festivals here at Kings Park on Sunday 01 November 2009.  So please make a note of this date and be sure to be available for this special event.  Games are arranged for all ages and skill levels so do not worry that your Little Tiger might not be ready for this event.  The main focus is have a fun day with players from other clubs.  We will also get invited to festivals at other clubs during the season.  Below is a list of the festival dates.
01 Nov 09    DeAT festival at King's Park
22 Nov 09    HK University festival at Sandy Bay, Pok Fu Lam
13 Dec 09    Flying Kukris festival at the Community Sports Center, Sheung Shui.
10 Jan 10    The Tai Po Dragons festival at King's Park.
14 Mar 10    The HK Football Club festival at Happy Valley

Above picture shows DeAT U6's in action during last seasons HK University festival.

Membership registration and kit
I understand the kit has now arrived so hopefully it will be ready for distribution to registered members this Sunday.  This will include a shirt, shorts, socks and a size three ball.  Please bring a marking pen with you in order to write your Little Tigers name on the back of their shirt and on the ball.  The kit must be worn at all training sessions and festivals and don't forget to bring your ball along each Sunday, except on festival Sundays, as your Little Tiger will need it for training and we will only have a small number of spare balls for those who forget.  Please let me know if you are having any problem registering on-line at www.deatigersrfc.com.   Also don't forget to keep a check on our club web site for the most up-to-date information.

Well that's enough for this week and I look forward to see you all again at King's Park this Sunday morning, starting at 08:45am.

Cheers,
Colin.
