Message from Club Chair: Lorna Meads

Dear All,

Please see below.  All our games on the 17 October will be at HKFC. The day will be a full on family day with face painting, balloons, bouncy castle etc in very safe contained space and grown ups can enjoy the rugby (bonus!).

It's for a very worthy cause, one that we have all been touched by either directly or indirectly, and it will be a great night.  Would be really good to see some support for an event which is actually, a day's worth of good rugby and camaraderie.  Realistically, we are the best clubs on and off the paddock, I sincerely hope that we, as DeA, can make a presence.

It will be a great day followed by an even better evening.  What better cause AND, time to put those glad rags on in between the summer and Christmas lull!

As you are aware Rugby players from the Hong Kong Football Club will be in pink when they scrum down against opposition as part of a fund-raising drive to support breast cancer awareness. All seven senior teams from the HKFC’s Rugby Section will wear a special pink kit for their league fixtures on 17th October, which will be followed by a black tie ‘Pretty in Pink Ball’ in the evening. The day hopes to raise more than HK$200,000 for the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation ("HKBCF"), inaugurated in March 2005, is the first charity dedicated to breast cancer in Hong Kong. With the combined efforts of breast cancer survivors, their supporters and health care professionals, HKBCF serve the community through breast cancer education, support and advocacy. The missions of HKBCF are to :

  • raise public awareness of breast cancer
  • stress the importance of early detection
  • provide support for breast cancer patients on their road to recovery
  • support research and push for better breast cancer care and treatment in Hong Kong.
  • For more information, please visit http://www.hkbcf.org.

The fund-raising initiative is the inspiration of the Rugby Section and is their way of pulling together members and friends of the Club to put something as a Group back into the community.   To choose a cause supporting breast cancer is nothing short of amazing.   Unfortunately most of us by way of friends, extended family, old school mates and work colleagues have been touched by this disease.

The reality is breast cancer is the fastest increasing cancer among women in terms of incidence. On average, over 6 females in Hong Kong are diagnosed with breast cancer each day with the highest risk culminating at the age of 40.  But women are not the only victims.   Breast cancer amongst men is also increasing.

To make this day and evening a reality we need the support of DEA.   It would be fantastic to see the Rugby fraternity pull together in supporting the "Pretty in Pink Ball" in the evening of Saturday 17th October.   It will be a great evening, with a live band, full course dinner, charity auctions and of course open bar to get us all in the swing.  Tickets for the evening cost $1,200 on an individual basis. This is a black tie event where we encourage you to "show us your Pink" by wearing as much pink as possible.

Please note all funds raised over the weekend as part of the event will be donated to the HKBCF.

Corporate tables are also available for the evening at a cost of HK$25,000.   If you or your Company would be interested in supporting in this manner please contact Antony Philips at prettyinpink@hkfc.com.   Significant acknowledgement of your Company's support will be made on the evening and throughout the day.

Look forward to seeing you at the Ball all pretty in pink!

Kind regards,

Lisa Foley
