First Division match report: Tigers roar to victory over hapless Causeway Bay
The undisputed star of the
show was Keith Robertson, who scored three tries, set up countless others
and had a night with the boot to remember. He certainly made up for
his poor form in front of the posts against Kowloon, to convert all
of DeA’s tries and a couple of penalties to boot.
Causeway Bay started brightly and it took the Tigers 15 minutes to put some points on the board, the try and subsequent conversion coming from that man Keith Robertson, who pounced on a loose ball to kick through the CWB defence, calmly collecting his kick and then running coolly around a couple of defenders using his blistering pace. 7-0
This was the beginning of the
end for CWB and the Tigers slowly started to impose their dominance
on the game and scored a few more tries to put the game to bed. The
Tigers dominance in the scrum and lineout grew, whilst the Tigers backs
were simply too fast and nimble for their stunned opponents.
An incident, which signaled the end of the first half, was all too familiar for the DeA Tigers players. The referee, who was incidentally refereeing his first top division game, pointed a yellow card in the direction of Simon Tasker. The DeA supporters (all 2 of them) jeered from the stands as Simon Tasker left the field in protest. Historians amongst you will no doubt look through the record books and note that Simon Tasker was yellow carded in his last 4 appearances for the the DeA Tigers and amazingly, his yellow card tally for the club stand at 58. A fact that may have inevitably led to his departure from the club.
The second half followed a
very similar pattern, as the DeA backs (and forwards) ran riot at So
Kon Po. Heavily mulleted import James ‘Coops’ Cooper even got in
on the act sidestepping his way through a number of tackles before offloading
to Ben Ho, who stepped CWB’s Sam Pinder to score under the posts.
Just as the game was coming to a close there were two incidents of note. Firstly Simon ‘Usain Bolt’ Porter was fed into open space after a marauding run by Matt ‘Drug Test’ Waugh, sadly, and to the amusement of the Tiger’s players and capacity crowd of 27, Simon got caught in a patch of quick sand that had somehow managed to sneak itself onto the pitch. Rapidly slowing down and with the CWB defence creeping ever so closer, Simon had the speed of mind that he lacked in his legs to pass the ball to the pacy Matthew Corbett, who had the aerodynamic qualities that can only be associated with a Gillette razor, to finish in style. Game over, or so it seemed. There was just enough time for Simon Tasker to get earn another yellow card, getting himself sent off for two book able offences. The curse strikes again.
A massive well done to everyone involved and to the ref who had a decent game. I think we were the youngest team ever to play a First Division match in Hong Kong…in So Kon Po, against Causeway Bay, in 2009. So, well done to everyone.
